A book jacket made for the classic novel The Great Gatsby for a project where our class explored dimensional typography. For the main title of our cover, we were required to “stage” text physically and photograph it. All additional type and design was done digitally.
I chose to typeset the title in two different fonts, a sans serif and a serif, to represent the duality of the character Jay Gatsby. I used ripped paper to swap visually between the two typefaces and showcase how layers of Gatsby are revealed throughout the book. I added glitter and confetti on top of this to suggest the parties featured in the book. The yellow and black color scheme was chosen to reference the Art Deco movement. Additionally, I the glitter and confetti elements continue into the inside flaps of the book jacket to unify the design.
